Chimney Inspection Levels 1, 2 & 3 Explained
Not All Inspections Are the Same
The chimney industry recognizes three levels of inspection, each defined by the NFPA. Knowing which one you need can save you money — and make sure nothing dangerous gets missed. Here's the plain-English breakdown.
Level 1 — The Annual Check-Up
For a chimney in regular use with no changes and no known problems. We examine the readily accessible portions of the chimney, flue, and connections for soundness, buildup, and obstructions. This is the right call for most homeowners year to year.
Level 2 — The Real Estate & "Something Changed" Inspection
Required when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, earthquake, or weather event, or when you change fuels or install a new appliance. It includes everything in Level 1 plus accessible attics, crawl spaces, and a video camera scan of the flue interior.
Level 3 — The Deep Investigation
Performed when a serious hazard is suspected that can't be evaluated otherwise. It may involve removing parts of the chimney or wall to reach concealed areas. It's rare, but critical when structural damage is on the table.
